Kochi Metro Phase II Targets August 2027 Completion

Kochi Metro Phase II Targets August 2027 Completion

Kochi’s expanding metro network is moving closer to Kakkanad’s growing urban corridor. Kochi Metro Phase II, led by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), is progressing towards its planned August 2027 opening, with construction teams working to accelerate civil works and prepare essential systems for operations. The expansion is expected to improve metro connectivity between the city and Infopark, subject to the project meeting its revised timeline.

Construction Progress and Project Timeline

The 10.58 km elevated corridor will connect Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium in Kaloor with Infopark via Kakkanad, featuring 10 stations. KMRL is targeting completion of the main construction by June 2027, followed by testing, commissioning and system integration before passenger services begin in August.

Key construction milestones include:

  • All station foundation work, including piling and pile caps, has been completed.
  • Approximately 85% of viaduct piling is finished, while nearly 3.5 km of the elevated structure, built using U girders and I girders, is ready for track laying.
  • Viaduct construction is advancing at around 25 to 30 metres daily, with further acceleration expected after the monsoon.
  • Contracts for track installation, power supply, signalling and telecommunications have been finalised, allowing different work packages to progress in parallel.

Land Acquisition and Utility Relocation

Construction has faced challenges from the corridor’s dense urban development, delayed land handovers and underground or overhead infrastructure. Relocating utilities and coordinating with multiple agencies have been essential to keeping the project moving.

  • At Civil Lane, between Pipeline Junction and Padamughal, the Indian Oil Adani Gas pipeline disrupted construction. Following its relocation in January 2026, piling and pier construction in the affected area was completed.
  • Kerala Water Authority (KWA) pipelines conflicting with station foundations required design changes and relocation, with this work nearing completion.
  • The JLN Stadium to Palarivattom stretch experienced delays due to phased land handover, major KWA pipelines and Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) high voltage transmission lines. Piling is progressing, while remaining civil work is expected to advance as land acquisition around Palarivattom and Padamugal is completed.

Commercial Plans and Supporting Projects

KMRL is also looking beyond ticket sales to strengthen its finances. Plans include offering semi naming rights for metro stations, developing additional commercial opportunities and filling essential vacant positions to support operations and expansion.

Related infrastructure work is progressing too. Water Metro stations at Kadamakkudy and Paliyamthuruth are nearing completion.

What August 2027 Means for Kochi Metro Connectivity

Kochi Metro Phase II is a significant step towards extending metro access to Kakkanad and Infopark. With major foundation work completed and viaduct construction progressing, attention is shifting towards track laying, system installation and final construction activities. Resolving the remaining land and utility issues will be essential to maintaining momentum and preparing the corridor for operations. If these stages stay on schedule, the 10.58 km extension could be ready to serve commuters by August 2027.
