Commuters passing through Kochi’s busy Vyttila Mobility Hub may soon have a green space to pause between journeys. The Vyttila Mobility Hub Nature Park, being developed beside the Kaniyampuzha River, is targeting a January 2027 opening. The 5.5-acre project aims to turn an unused, hazardous site into a public recreational space, combining natural landscaping with facilities for commuters, families and children.
Cochin Smart Mission Ltd (CSML) is carrying out the development for Vyttila Mobility Hub Society (VMHS). Around 70% of the construction work has reportedly been completed, with the remaining civil works targeted for completion within two months.
The project experienced delays due to funding constraints. VMHS has recently transferred the full project allocation of ₹9.56 crore, covering the park's development and repairs to the mobility hub's carriageway.
Rather than relying on extensive concrete structures, the design prioritises natural landscaping and the retention of existing trees. This approach is intended to preserve the site's greenery while creating an accessible outdoor space within the busy transport complex.
The first phase of Vyttila Mobility Hub Nature Park will introduce several amenities for visitors. Planned facilities include:
Transport connectivity is also part of the plan. Six access routes will link the park directly with the mobility hub's 13 bus bays, allowing visitors to return to their buses more conveniently. A sculpture gallery is among the features planned for a later phase.
The park is progressing while CSML faces administrative challenges and a reduced workforce, following the departure of nearly 75% of its employees as the organisation focuses on completing pending projects.
The Nature Park could offer Vyttila Mobility Hub a useful balance between transport infrastructure and public recreation. With riverfront seating, children's facilities and direct connections to bus bays, the project is designed to serve both daily commuters and families.
